Dylan-5 is an assignment I did for Character and Object Design class.
It's about a Robot Police from Michinneapolis who went
undercover to blend in and bring down a gang called "iDroids."
The idea is inspired by one of my own drawings I did awhile back, titled "Droid Dude Dwight."
Check it out.
After making up my mind to go with this story, I started thumbnailing and sketching out possible 'cop looks' for Dylan-5 since I already have his undercover appearance.
Throughout the process, my character went through a number of different looks and iterations, including but not limited to a transformer SUV cop, a trench-coat wearing inspector robot, a British police android, a steampunk law enforcer, or even a Bender ripoff cop. Finally, I picked a simple, pragmatic design that is not very different from Dylan's gangster look. Once, I have a design to go with, I started painting the journey begins painting where Dylan-5 is seen trying on the upgrades and undercover gear. I used the photo-reference for the painting.
Then comes the sculpting part. It's my first time sculpting and it was fun. I'm a little challenged when it comes to handling the clay but I'm a natural everything...so. In all seriousness though, I end up sculpting the shapes I'm comfortable shaping rather than being faithful to Dylan-5's appearance from the painting. In other words, instead of controlling the clay, the clay controlled me to some extent. But my final sculpture turned out looking great. Even though it does not look exactly like his design from the painting, it is close enough.
